During the Summer Olympics, I heard one commentator talk regularly about the performance of the medal-winning athletes. The common words about these very well-trained super athletes were “focused intently and executed cleanly.” Those words resonate with me as I consider what it takes to build a high-performing team.
I have been honored to work with a number of teams intent on improvement and growth. The teams that have been most successful are those that have a strong sense of their core. There is a strong ‘Central Organizing Responsiveness Experience’ that brings them together as unique and differentiates them from other teams. They work in unison, able to bring together their differences, and perform fluidly so that everyone is part of the winning attitude. A good example is the USA women’s gymnastics “Final Five” team. This team’s success can be attributed largely to each athlete’s willingness to work as a team and contribute their own talents to the success of the larger group. This approach yielded individual accomplishment and overall team excellence, not to mention a team gold medal.
Being focused is about removing any and all distractions. Executing cleanly is about delivering what is committed and even exceeding what was planned. Can organizational teams do this? Of course they can! They can begin by figuring out what might be holding them back and uncovering the chokepoints that keep their team from performing cohesively and achieving greater success.
