Senior Generational Development

The Family Business Senior
Telephone Forum

We are delighted to present a unique opportunity to collaborate with other family business leaders, while never leaving your office. Some day you may no longer wish to be working on a daily basis in your family business. This series of weekly meetings will explore questions and share experiences about "Stepping Out" from family business.

Mission:

The senior forum is a telephone gathering of men and women in the senior generation from family owned businesses who want to explore the difficulties that many experience around "Stepping Out" of their family firm. The Forum's purpose is to develop different concepts that help explain the issues and ultimately help ease the generational challenges in family business. Our focus will be less on the specifics of taxes and legal documents and more on building understanding, resolving differences, and confirming that there is life after family business. Our goal is to learn how different families are addressing these issues, determine 'best practices' and provide support and education to others that might be facing similar issues.

Timing:

Six one-hour weekly discussions will be conducted. The calls will take place on a weekday afternoon at 2pm EST. Each participant will call a central telephone number (commonly known as a telephone bridge), where up to fifteen people can be on the call simultaneously.

Terry Schaefer will serve as Forum Facilitator. We will contact each participant prior to the first call. This interview will provide instruction on teleconference protocol, and get a general understanding of each participant's background and expectations. The participants should feel free to share information at their own comfort level.

Cost: The six week forum, including handouts, resource information, and one hour of personal coaching, is priced at $600 per person. The bridge number will be provided upon completion of the registration.

Discussion Areas:

First call : Developing the trust, respect and ground rules for the following five sessions. How we manage our individual needs for confidentiality, and how the group wants to manage areas of our uniqueness. The leader will share some of the participants' expectations from the individual pre-class calls and all participants can express what they hope to learn.

Second call: "Stepping Out" is a hard subject to talk about. Let's define the who, what, when, where, and how of the 'Stepping Out' issue.

Third call : "The agony of choices; the rewards of a new way of living." What do we do now? How do we go about exploring our options? What criteria and decisions need to be explored to make sure the next step is best for our futures? How might one's whole family get involved in this exploration? What will our roles become in the business? "Continued involvement" in the family enterprise may still mean a great deal to us.

Fourth call : "Banking on your life's strengths and strategies!" Are we to depend on the business? Does this make us financially dependent on our children? Investing in our life's visions.

Fifth call : "Is there someone to take over the helm; succession preparation?" What knowledge, skill and experience is required of the next leader? How do we determine that? Is there a process we can use that will minimize the effort for all involved?

Last call : A group discussion reviewing their experience and what are their next steps.

Benefits:

1. New insights on complex issues in transitioning a family firm to the next generation.

2. New possibilities to expand your awareness on different solutions for your specific situation.

3. Develop methods of building a future that are effortless.
