Generational Understanding.

Working with family business is fulfilling because of all the generational issues that appear in the family and in the business. There are ways of understanding them, and respecting one's point of view. Do you know there are four generations in the workplace?

Let me give you an example:

An accountant friend of mine asked me for some coaching around a family, which he has worked with for over 15 years. The grandparents (the founder though not active in the daily management) still owns the majority of the company. Their son, who suffered from a rare disease, has stepped aside, and his son (the grandson of the founder) is taking care of the daily management (though has not been appointed to that position). This grandson (in his thirties) is doing things against the wishes of his grandparents (and major stockholders).

As we discussed this situation, it became apparent the grandparents and grandson view on the future were very different. The grandparents had experienced the depression, and the grandson has only experienced the expansive economy. These contrasting views needed exploring in a safe and understanding forum.

It is my position to help the family look at the differences in their personal views, and help each member see what the others see from their perspective. Through a set of assessment and interactive exercises, a dialogue begins and through this process, people get to the source of their disagreements.

Does this take long? It does not have to! It is my job (as a success coach) to facilitate personal learning and understanding of each party involved. Once the members involved hear each other perspective, expansive and imaginative ideas form to help each one know one another better.

I share this example with you since the same issues happen in organizations all the time. Providing an open and communicative setting starts a dialogue where others can be innovative. This innovation produces new frontiers, which breeds opportunity, and opportunity begets better productivity.

This is all about building a loyal employee base, where a team works as a great set of talents for a common goal. In this tight employee market keep good employees is just as hard as finding them.

My promise to you!
