Are you ready? Are they ready? Is this the right move for your succession planning? Is the next generation ready is one question, and are they interested is another. Do you even know? A colleague of mine told me about his assignment with one client to change his son to become a better merchandiser. The son had a background in engineering and loved working with computers. To make a great story short, this client saw that gas and water do not mix. So, are you experiencing the same, and you are pulling out your hair to solve the issue? I have worked with several senior executives who are looking at their succession process as their next career endeavor. As I see their involvement in this process, I see their innovative side bring creative solutions to hard issues. The average results I expereience with these executives is they are spending five to seven more hours per week with their family. They also are stepping aside atleast 18 to 24 months earlier than they had predicted. One executive reported that his blood pressure had dropped. Well, then before you hire the financial and legal expertise, let's take some time to really articulate what's going on, and focus on what is key for success (how ever you define success!). Succession planning is a process, not an event.
